A flyer announcing the BLAB has just been sent out to various
departments via campus mail. Thanks to Adam Shriver for putting
it together (with some artistic help from his partner Lori).

Please let any interested colleagues and graduate students know
about the group. People can subscribe to this list at:
http://grimpeur.tamu.edu/mailman/listinfo/animals.

Our first meeting will be this Friday, September 17, at 4:00 at my house:

	Gary Varner (and Melissa Reyna)
	406 Woodson Drive, Bryan
	Phone: 846-0250

Directions: From the U.S. Post Office on University Drive, go north on
College Main. Just before College Main ends in a “T” intersection with
Old College, turn right onto Woodson Drive. We’re the house on the
outside of the turn at the end of the street, with a red Toyota truck in
the driveway.

I’ll have a couple of snacks on hand and a cooler for those who bring
something to drink (which you’re welcome to do, but it’s not required).
Weather and insects permitting, we’ll sit outside on our (rather
decrepit) deck.

The reading for this week is:

K.P. Chandroo et al., "Can fish suffer?: perspectives on
sentience, pain, fear and stress," APPLIED ANIMAL BEHAVIOUR
	SCIENCE 86 (2004): 225-250.

This is available on-line through Evans Library. Go to:
https://libcat.tamu.edu/, search for the journal title (note the
British spelling of “behaviour”), click on the “electronic resource”
version of the journal, select “Full text from Elsevier ScienceDirect,”
and then find the article in the part of volume #86 that includes pages
225-250. The PDF version preserves journal pagination, although you can
conveniently jump to the references and sometimes on to the referenced
articles using the HTML version.

Ted Friend's group has proposed that the group do some readings on
cognition in elephants and swine. Other suggestions encouraged.
