BVC-CHAT Bike To Work Day Bike Giveaway

Thanks for the positive response. If BVC would like to conduct the first annual bike giveaway, on Bike to Work Day, I will donate the bike to BVC and work with Robert Rose and Amy Sharp to develop a criteria, contact the agencies and find a person who needs the bike. If George L. has another bike or two, we could find more beneficiaries. This bike is almost ready to go. It does need to be cleaned (I'll be calling on Rolef), but Robert Rose gave it a tune about a month ago and I've only ridden to TAMU a few times since. I'd be willing to take some digital pics and get it to Jean Marie for the website so we could promote it properly.
That said, I suppose permission/endorsement from (Kevin, Ed and Colin) will get it started. So if one of you officer types could create the committee and appoint me to chair it, I'll make happen. Now it doesn't have to be a formal coronation, I just want to do it right. If there some specific objectives the BVC would like to accomplish, I'll be happy to work within those guidelines. My concept for this thing is to help someone that could really use it to support themselves and create positive PR for the BVC in the future. If it works, I don't know why we couldn't do it on an annual basis. If we find a recipient, I'll send out press releases in advance so we can get some air time with the local media.
Thanks,

Good eyes! I completely missed it.
It's at the bottom of the "Bikes On The Loose" section on page 30.
I'll scan it for the web site.

Bicycling Magazine has a section on best club rides, and the Flagpole
ride made it in there.
Kris and Angela -- I recall you have a scanner -- can you find this,
scan it and send to me and I'll put it up on the BVC
site.

Good job, Chris for contacting the Eagle! Kris sent me a jpg of
the Bicycling page, we are listed at the bottom.
http://www.brazoscyclists.org/IMAGE/bicycling.jpg
It's a little fuzzy, but legible. This is also linked on the News
and Information section of the BVC main page http://www.brazoscyclists.org
I also added the A&M Cycling Team to our "Friends" section
on the BVC site, as requested. ... Stuff like this is easy
for me to overlook, so if you notice something like this, please
mention it and keep reminding me until it gets done. Sometimes
I'm fast (like today) in getting it fixed, sometimes I forget.
Quick web improvements like this I am *always* happy to make.

I like the give-away idea. A few months ago Robert brought a magazine to a
BVC mtg about a town that had some bikes given to some members and later
they calculated mileage, etc and showed how the folks benefited from the
bikes. This might be a contact to find out how someone else figured out who
to give bikes to. Plus we could use the give-away as a means to enhance the
BVC image and as a way to keep our name in the news if we followed these
folks for a while. Another idea is to contact orgs like Project Unity,
BVCAA, BVCOG, Tx Work Force, TEC, SSA, etc. and ask them to distribute
applications to prospective candidates as they have consistent contact with
folks in need. I have a contact who could translate the application form
into Spanish.
I would like to nominate Willie for VP if he accepts...

greatest idea i've heard today.
George scrounges used bikes and works on them some to resell. He would be
willing to donate for something like this as well.
In the past, he has taken several bikes a year to Still Creek, but they seem
pretty saturated right now.

I have a gently used 2-year old Trek 800 Hybrid bike that I'd like to donate
to BVC, so BVC can then find a person who cannot afford to buy a bike and
who has an immediate need for a bike so they can get to work. The bike is in
great shape. It has a platform on the rear and a front and rear light. It
has standard pedals. I was inspired to do this yesterday, because I noticed
many bikes at the Shammy car wash and found out many of the workers bike to
work every day. I asked if anyone there had a need and they said everyone
had a way to work. Then it hit me....BVC finds a needy individual and gives
the bike to them on bike to work day at Freebird's or wherever. I just
wanted to toss this out, get some feedback and determine if this would be
feasible. I'm wondering how we would determine the recipient. My idea was
someone who had low income and no transportation. It could be a worker or
student who needs transportation. What do you think?

That was in Bicycling Magazine - and the bikes were given to the town by
Trek. I believe they ran an essay contest to pick the winners.

Please mark your calendars for attending both Bryan and College Station
city council meetings for presentation of proclamations designating Friday
April 30th as BTW&S Day. College Station: Thursday April 8th 7:00pm.
Bryan: Tuesday April 27th at 6:00pm. A showing of BVC support would score
some points with the councils and further our cause for bikeways and related
projects.
