August 10 hangs on my calendar, laden with emotions, associated with
horror.
The cycling team members on whose jerseys display the WB initials were
watching the last few days of their summer vacations fade into the
approach of the next junior high school year on that Sunday morning in
1997.
It was a bike ride that began like so many others. The usual suspects
met at the convenience store. We wanted to get in a quick ride before
the responsibilities of the day made other demands of our time.
We ride our bikes to recreate, and to socialize and because it's a part
of what makes us who we are.
But on August 10, 1997, Wayne Bryan didn't get home from our ride.
A car whose driver fell asleep at the wheel ended our ride on that
sunny morning.
Every time I pass that marker out on highway 30, I raise a bottle. In
memory. In honor. In praise.
I think of my family. I think of my friends. I think of all the cars
that pass this marker each day. And I think of the smile on Wayne's
face as he would ride up to join us for another opportunity to breath in
deeply of the day, to socialize and recreate, to live intensely one
pedal stroke at a time.
Ride with us Wayne. Stay in our thoughts. God bless you Wayne.
