So I decided to see if I could complete the Waco Wild West 100 yesterday. It was my second road event. (the other was the 100k May Day ride) I did not see anybody I recognized, but there were quite a few people out there.

The first part of the ride was fast and everyone rode in huge groups for the most part. No wind and low temperatures made it great. Then we turned South just after Crawford and it blew the field to hell. The temps jumped to 97 degrees and the middle part of the race was into 16 to 18 mph winds. Many people cracked and bailed between 58 and 92 miles.

I started cramping a little at 60 miles and it got worse at 82 miles when we went over the Hwy 84 overpasses. Many people I was riding near called it a day right there. I limped to the Skittles factory rest stop and tried to get some composure back, but I was determined to continue. I crawled to the last rest stop at 92 miles and the cramps came on full blast. The last mile was a horrible repetition of both legs cramping in unison with each rise and fall of the pedals. But I made it.

Except for the cramping, the wind, the heat and the bike riding, it was a fun time. Next year I am riding directly to the Skittles factory rest stop and hanging out the entire day under the tent eting candy and ice cream.
