All of this detail on riding in a pace line is quite informative to someone who has never done it.
I've ridden to Caldwell and back once, in the summer of 2006, as a 'ride my age' birthday challenge to myself. Rode it on a steel MTB with a road slick tire on front and a knobby tire on the back. Took me 4 1/2 hours to do it. My wife rode the stretch from the convenience store on Hwy 50 to Caldwell and back. The last 10 or 12 miles from the convenience store to the Edelweiss subdivision, a kind gentleman on a nice road bike rode next to me and we conversed about cycling and bicycles. Then at the 4-way stop of I&GN and Graham we went our separate ways. I've forgotten the rider's name but he was about my age and I'm still grateful for his conversation and encouragement to help me make the whole ride.
This fall I plan to ride to Caldwell and back again since I'm still not as old as the round trip mileage...on my ride the Saturday morning pace line was heading west as I was returning east and it was an impressive group running fast in full kit. My steadfast Fredness must have provided a moment of humor to the pack.
