I mentioned it before, but as long as you are moving/pedaling, your muscles
generate a lot of heat. You probably would have been comfortable enough with
a few less layers. Someone posted a link yesterday (I think) about
exercising in cold weather...it was a good read.

Turns out the worst thing about the ride for me was my pre-ride  
anxiety about the cold.  (Tazim can provide details on my  
kvetching. :-)  I was much more comfortable than I'd anticipated  
being.  Good winter gear played an important part in that, but the  
super clear weather also yielded a bright sun and lots of radiant heat.
