Gary Varner had a good letter in the Eagle this morning:

Slightly edited from his original, which I include below my signature.

-----------------------------

Thanks to Jean Marie Linhart for her Sunday plea for patience on our
roads. She's right that "Most drivers are doing their best to look out
for cyclists, but the few who aren't are a lot easier to notice." Just
the day before, I noticed one. I was riding back from Caldwell to
College Station with a group of about 30 cyclists. Headed south on the
narrow road from Cook's Point to Tunis on Saturday morning, the group
became split in two. When a white SUV overtook those of us in the rear
group at a high rate of speed, the passenger smashed an empty beer
bottle into our lane. The people in that SUV didn't just fail to
understand that cyclists have a right to use the road -- they were
trying to get us hurt. I wasn't able to read their license number and
I couldn't yell loud enough to get the riders in the lead group to do
so, but I'd like to know what the people in that SUV were thinking. I
doubt that they mind waiting a moment to pass slow-moving farm
machinery on such roads. So why to they object so vehemently to doing
the same for people enjoying a green form of transportation?
