Funeral services for a 57-year-old Burleson County man who was hit by a car while riding his bicycle over the weekend are set for Friday, family members said.
Donald Nelson, who lived near Cooks Point, was killed on Texas 21 around 8 p.m. Sunday about five miles east of Caldwell.
Services are set for 11 a.m. Friday at Macedonia Baptist Church in Caldwell. A burial will follow at Zion Hill Cemetery on County Road 221.
Department of Public Safety officials continued to investigate the accident that caused Nelson's death, Trooper Jason Adams said Wednesday.
Adams said Nelson rode his bike in front of a vehicle driven by 52-year-old Lufkin resident John Evans while crossing Texas 21 on F.M. 1362.
Nelson was wearing dark clothing and crossed on an unlighted portion of the highway, he said.
"We have no idea why he rode his bike into the road," Adams said. Evans told troopers he didn't see Nelson until it was too late.
No citations are likely to be issued, Adams said.
Nelson's mother, Ella Mae Nelson, said her son rode his bike "everywhere he went."
The 77-year-old Caldwell resident said her son often rode the eight miles from Cooks Point to her home to visit her.
On the night he died, Ella Mae Nelson said, Donald Nelson was on his way home from Cooks Point Store.
Donald Nelson, who was known as Donnie Ray to his family, worked intermittently for Cooks Point Store and Sanderson Farms. His mom said he had lived in Burleson County his entire life and was well known among residents.
"He's going to be terribly missed. I don't know anybody that didn't like him. So that means I won't be the only one who misses him," she said. "He was my heart. I loved him, and he knew that."
