Subject: Re: [bvmba] Totally Awesome Totally Free Women's Mountain Bike Clinic
This was a rocking clinic, I can't speak highly enough for it. The
Waco riding community deserves huge kudos for putting this on and
doing such an outstanding job. The whole thing is completely utterly
totally free free free - from the parking to the camping to the food
to the presentations to the demonstrations to the riding to the
showers to the movies, all completely free. And, like JM says, you
don't even need to have a bike, you can borrow one - and I'm not
talking some Walmart special, either, these are top of the line
Specialized bikes they're handing out. Debbie got to ride a
Specialized Myka last year
(http://www.specialized.com/bc/SBCBkModel.jsp?arc=2008&spid=34242) -
not your run of the mill loaner. There were clinics on bike
maintenance (how to fix a flat and check your brakes and so on),
cornering, circling, riding under low stuff, jumping over stuff, a
nutrition clinic, and a yoga session. And then there was riding! The
Waco club split us up according to our ability- and they weren't shy
about suggesting which group they thought you should be in if you had
doubts - and then took us riding on trails suited to those levels. We
had a 2-3 hour ride on Saturday afternoon and another one on Sunday
morning. The thing that impressed me most of all about this clinic is
how they handled so many levels of riders - from the absolute novice
to the experienced rider, there was something for everyone. Ok, yes,
I know how to change a flat, but Debbie's niece didn't, so I got to
help her with hers. If you knew how to duck under a limb, they'd
teach you how to hang off the side of your bike as you went under
something low. If you knew how to hop over a log, they'd show you how
to jump it cleanly. This was a great clinic and I strongly recommend
it to any woman rider out there.
