I forgot to  respond to the following point:

An empty box with nothing inside, such as '[ ]', is
syntactically correct.  It means that there exists something of some
unknown type to which there is no coreference link specified.
If you
need to refer to that unknown thing, you can put a coreference label
inside, such as [*x29].  You could write [: *x29], but the colon is not
necessary, since the * distinguishes it as a coreference
label.
