Please make an effort to stop by the CSISD offices on Welsh St. to view the
Health and Wellness texts up for review. They will continue to be on view
on Monday Jan 24th and Tues Jan 25th from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. Review forms, a
copy of the TEKS, and envelopes for returning your forms are with the
Receptionist at the entrance to the CSISD. The books are in a room down
the hall.

I reviewed the four Grade 9-12 books this morning and it took me about 1
hour. You can do as much or as little as you wish, but this is a crucial
time to let the SHEC and Board of Trustees know whether you think the books
teach what they should about health and wellness. I paid special attention
to the absence of discussion of contraception in the books (except for a
brief paragraph in the Delmar Thompson book), an omission that violates a
TEK described in Chap 115, Subchapter C, 7, I (the capital letter I), which
directs teachers to have students "Analyze the effectiveness and
ineffectiveness of barrier protection and other contraceptive methods . . .
keeping in mind the effectiveness of remaining abstinent until
marriage." You might be surprised at the tone adopted in several of these
books....

We should also take a moment to communicate our concerns to members of the
School Board, letting them know what we think of the materials provided to
the State of Texas. www.csisd.org has a link to the School Board list.
