The January 18 school board meeting began at 7:00 p.m. and adjourned into
an Executive Session at 7:45 p.m. Most of the meeting was pretty
routine. These are the highlights:

*Lisa Ellis (as you know from previous correspondence) spoke effectively
about the need to retain the enrichment program. The Board President, Marc
Chaloupka, assured the audience that the board did not want to make cuts
but that the budget situation results from legislative action (or
inaction?--PAP editorial comment). He encourage folks to write legislators
about their concerns.

*The board discussed and approved the submission of a Waiver for the School
Start Date for the 2005-06 school year. This is required if a school
district wants to begin before August 21. The CSISD Board has indicated a
desire to begin on August 16.

*The board reviewed District Goals and Objectives for the 2005-06 school
year. These are largely the same as last year (and I'm sorry but I just
didn't get them all down) and include, among other matters, targeting for
improvement the achievements of African American students, an item for
which administrators were commended by the board. The Goals and Objectives
were approved unanimously.

That's about it. There were some ceremonies, recognitions, and a
unanimously approved Consent Agenda.

Humbly submitted,
Paul Parrish
