Stop HB 3!

The Texas House leadership wants you to pay higher taxes so the wealthiest
Texans can pay lower taxes.

We're not kidding. According to the Legislative Budget Board, House Bill 3
would raise taxes for everyone whose income is less than $100,000 a year and
lower taxes for everyone whose income is above $100,000 a year.

It gets even worse. The poorer you are, the bigger the tax increase. The
wealthier you are, the bigger the tax cut. The biggest winners under this
bill are finance, real estate and insurance companies.

And worst of all, HB 3 does not raise a plugged nickel for our public
schools!!!

The House leadership wants you to believe this tax bill is about improving
public schools, but it isn't. By rule, any new taxes in the bill must go
toward property tax reduction. Not one cent raised in HB 3 can go to
schools, but schools are nevertheless being held hostage to this blatant tax
political con job.

All HB 3 does is trade taxes - and it's a bad trade for you. Property owners
would indeed see a reduction in school property taxes, but almost everyone
would see increases in the sales tax, the even higher tax on cars and other
taxes that would more than make up for any savings on property taxes.

Please contact your representative in the Texas House and ask for a "NO"
vote on HB 3. Let's stop legislators from ripping off working Texans.

Dear [ Decision Maker ],

HB 3, as proposed by the House Ways and Means Committee and endorsed by the
House leadership, won't do a thing for our public school system and will
accomplish little more than redistributing wealth from ordinary working
Texans to the wealthiest Texans.

The bill does not meet the No. 1 need of building excellence in our public
schools and it does not meet any legitimate test of fairness in tax reform.

Please vote "NO" on HB 3. Texas would be better off with no bill at all.
Please hold out for a school finance package that walks the walk of
improving our schools and holds out the brightest future for Texas.

Sincerely,

Sincerely,
