Notes from a fairly brief School Board Meeting, held 7/19/05, are attached. Due to the lack of progress by the legislature on school funding, several important topics were tabled, or stop-gap measures were required.
I have been in contact with Mike Ball and the principals of Oakwood and AMCMS (and I spoke at the Board Meeting) about the recently erected fence around Oakwood's field. Since kids can no longer ride across the field it is now very dangerous for kids to ride their bikes from the neighborhoods to the south of these schools (and even hampers those walking), because they'll need to ride/walk on Holik or Timber. These streets have no sidewalks, and are clogged with parked cars, buses and other traffic. My kids bicycle to school, and many of our neighbors chose to live close to schools to enable their kids to do the same. I'm very distressed by actions that encourage more cars on the road, instead of more exercise for kids!
I am requesting that an opening or gate be made in the fence, or that a bike path be paved around the outside of the fence. I understand that Jane Rankin, the Oakwood principal, wanted the fence because Aggies were parking to the south of the school and walking across the field, and she felt it was a security concern. I believe that cars and buses pose a much greater threat to my child's safety than Aggies walking to class, but there may have been incidents of which I am not aware.
If you would like to contact the principals and school board via e-mail, their addresses are below. If all you have the time for is to express concern for your or your neighbor's child, even that would be helpful.
