Dear CSPS Friends,

The current CSPS Board met Sunday last, 15 May; I have copied below the
minutes of that meeting, supplied by Rebecca Hankins and Kate Kelly.

As you will see from the minutes, the Board presented a slate of candidates
for Officers and At-large Board Members, as follows:

Co-Presidents: Kate Kelly and Howard Marchitello
Vice-President: Lisa Halperin
Secretary: Rebecca Hankins
Treasurer: Arturo Alonzo (Note: Arturo, who has ably served as
treasurer for the past few years, has asked the Board to seek a replacement
for him; the new Board will begin that process directly)

At-large Board: Lucy Deckard
                         Lisa Ellis
                         Eric Lindquist
                         Arvind Mahajan
                         Paul Parrish
                         Susan Scott
                         Katie Womack

The Board agreed that we would hold an electronic vote on this slate of
candidates. Accordingly, I write to ask you to send your votes--affirmative
or negative on the slate as a whole. I ask that you send your votes to me
(marchitello at tamu.edu) at your earliest convenience, though no later,
please, than Sunday 22 May.

If you have any questions about this slate, this election, or this process,
please feel free to contact me and I will try to provide accurate responses.

I would like to extend my thanks to those members--continuing and new--who
have volunteered to serve in elected positions. If you would like to play a
more active role in CSPS, please contact me--or any of the Board members.

The summer tends to be a quiet time for CSPS. The Board will resume formal
meetings in September, but we will be in touch with each other and with the
membership periodically, and as seems appropriate.

Finally, if there are issues you feel CSPS should address, I ask that you
send your thoughts to me, Kate, or any member of the Board.

Best wishes,
Howard

CSPS Meeting
15 May 2005
Arvind Mahajans home
Minutes

Present: Dennis Berthold, Lisa Ellis, Cecelia Hawkins, Lisa Halperin,
Rebecca Hankins, Kate Kelly, Eric Lindquist, Arvind Mahajan, Howard
Marchitello, Larry Oliver, Paul Parrish, Lynne Vallone

Old Business: Howard and Kate reminded those present of additional new
members who have agreed to serve as at-large members on the Board: Lucy
Deckard, Susan Scott and Katie Womack.

New Business: The purpose of this meeting was to discuss the nominating of
a new CSPS Board. After some discussion, the following emerged:

At-Large Members: Lucy Deckard, Lisa Ellis, Eric Lindquist,
Arvind Mahajan, Paul Parrish, Susan Scott, Katie Womack.
Officers: Kate Kelly & Howard Marchitello, co-presidents; Lisa
Halperin, vice-president; Rebecca Hankins, secretary; Arturo Alonzo,
Treasurer (to be replaced);

Action items:

Eric Lindquist has agreed to take over the listserve from Cecelia.
Jonathan Coopersmith will coordinate School Board meeting coverage.
Send new slate of officers to the CSPS listserv for electronic ratification

Issues of concern for the new year:

State-level issues:

1. School Board financing
2. School Board membership
· a proposed bill requiring that local school boards elect at least
50% of their membership anew every two years

                   Action item:
Lisa Halperin will clarify this bill and contact
CSPS members if it appears that it may come to committee; we discussed the
flaws in this bill: it overrides local control and weakens institutional
memory on school boards)

3. Proposed new start-of-year date for post Memorial Day (this is
being driven by the tourism industry)

Local issues:

1. New superintendent.

         · Current superintendent Johnson will be here until October
or November of 2005.
         · Board member Garland Watson wants to meet with CSPS to
get input on the search for a new superintendent.
         · We discussed some of the qualities CSPS would support in
a new superintendent: a person with broad experience inside and outside of
Texas
         · a person dedicated to improving the opportunities for
students at both ends of the performance continuum; a person interested in
raising Consols level from top 2% to top 1%.

                   Action item:

(Arvind agreed to send an email to current Board
members announcing the members of our new Board and reminding them that
CSPS members are available to serve on various local committees, including
the search committee for a new superintendent.)

             2. Second high school

         · We agreed CSPS should be proactive in conversations about
the size and design of a second high school.
         · A new elementary school may be built before a second high
school is built.

Our next meeting will occur in early September 2005.

Respectfully submitted, 5/16/05
Kate Kelly
