VOUCHER VOTE SET FOR THIS SUNDAY!

 

The House Public Education committee on Wednesday voted to roll into the
Texas Education Agency Sunset bill a huge private school voucher program
that could take $600 million from public schools in the first two years. The
TEA Sunset bill, S.B. 422, now includes much of what was previously H.B.
1263 (a voucher bill that never made it to a floor vote before the House
bill deadline). 

 

Major provisions of the voucher section of S.B. 422 are listed at the end of
this alert. 

 

Because S.B. 422 has already passed the Texas Senate, the amended bill
containing vouchers  will be voted on only in the Texas House. It is
important to take action IMMEDIATELY to urge representatives to remove
vouchers from S.B. 422.

 

TAKE ACTION

 

If you make only one call this session, now is the time! Call your
representative today or Sunday. The staff will be answering phones.  Tell
them to remove vouchers from the TEA Sunset bill.

In the first two years:

Austin ISD could lose: $74 million
Dallas ISD could lose: $165 million
Edgewood ISD (San Antonio) could lose: $13 million
Fort Worth ISD could lose: $79 million
Houston ISD could lose: $200 million
North Forest ISD (Houston) could lose: $9 million
San Antonio ISD could lose: $54 million
South San Antonio ISD could lose: $9 million

 

The amount of money these districts could lose after August 1, 2008 is
inestimable, because as of that date there are no limits on how many
students could receive a private school tuition voucher.
