I have been talking to teachers at Consolidated about large classes,
lack of substitutes, poor discipline (atttibuted to large classes)
and the threat of teaching six classes instead of five. There is a
lot of tension and worry amongst those educators.
There is an op-ed in today's Chronicle by the chair of the Houston
Community College system in support, partly, of dual enrollment. He
writes, ""Dual credit" or "dual enrollment" programs allow high
school juniors and seniors to enroll in community college courses for
both high school and college credit. Students would be allowed to
take college level courses in their own high school. Because students
could finish high school with up to two years of college credit, dual
enrollment would save parents and students college tuition. At the
Houston Community College System, an existing high school program
waives tuition for in-district students, meaning students can obtain
up to two years of college credit at no cost." This concerns me, as
you know, in terms of quality control.

The death-knell of the republic had rung as soon as the active power
became lodged in the hands of those who sought, not to do justice to
all citizens, rich and poor alike, but to stand for one special class
and for its interests as opposed to the interests of others.
Theodore Roosevelt, Labor Day speech at Syracuse, NY, Sept 7, 1903
