Unless there is an unforeseen stay, next Tuesday June 2 Texas will
execute Terry Hankins, who will be the 200th person killed by the
state under the administration of Rick Perry.
This is a sad milestone, a symbol of the lack of leadership by the
state.
Among the 200 that have died at the hands of the state are mentally
retarded -- that is no longer constitutional.
Among the 200 that have died are people who committed their crimes
before they turned 18 -- that is no longer constitutional.
And almost certainly among the 200 that have died are people who were
innocent of the crimes -- that has never been right.
If you share our dismay at the lack of leadership at the state level
and the governor's commitment to the executions, please join us for a
special vigil, next Tuesday, June 2. We protest at the corner of
Texas Ave. and Walton, from 5:30-6:00 p.m. Home made signs are
encouraged, but we have a banner for those who do not feel creative.
