Subject: Action: Protest At Polunsky

Friends,

Today we held the second protest demanding humane conditions on death
row in front of Polunsky. Our numbers increased today. Tweny four
enthusiastic determined Texas citizens stood in front of the prison
holding signs and passing out literature. Quite a number of passers by
were interested in knowing what we had to say.

We were standing on both sides of the road but off prison property.
Warden Zeller drove out to where we were and told us we had to stand
only on the other side of the road. We told him the sheriff's
department had told us we could stand on the both sides in the county
easement. He said he intended to call them. Ten minutes or so later a
sheriff's department car came by and drove into the Polunsky entrance.
A short while later both the sheriff car and Warden Zeller drove slowly
out and down to Warden Zeller's house. Both cars sat there awhile.
Then both cars drove back onto into the Polunsky entrance. A short
while later the sherriff's department car drove out and left. No one
said anything to us.

It is imperative that we make an impressive showing of our determination
to see improvements made. Again I am asking you to please be in front
of Polunsky next Wednesday at 11 AM. Some people are making big
sacrifices to be there and driving long distances. All of them know
that what they are doing is important and is making an elequent
statement on behalf of human dignity. It would be not a good thing is
our numbers of protesters do not continue to grow.

Incidentally, although many of the guards just don't really look at us
when they drive in and out, some of them are giving us "thumbs up".
They know we are fighting on the side of right, and that improvements in
treatment (not limited to but including excessive gassings and uses of
force) will benefit them as well as prisoners.

Please come and help us.

Nancy
