Subject: Living Wage speaker, books
Hi Susan and all,
We just got back to town and are reorganizing ourselves.
I like the idea of Richard Troxell coming to discuss the proposed Living Wage campaign. Will this be the Fredericksen event for this year, or will there be another?
Any of the Sundays in March that you mentioned are open for me, so far.
HAPPY NEW YEAR TO EACH OF YOU!
Kathryn
Dear JPI Exec. Council,
Richard Troxell, National Chair of Universal Living Wage, is enthusiastic about coming to College Station (he's in Austin) to speak/discuss the issue and strategies for beginning a LW campaign. Weekends are best for him. What do you think about inviting him for a Sunday afternoon presentation and discussion, followed by a reception to encourage people to mingle and talk? In addition to publicizing the event in our newsletter, press releases and KEOS, I'd want to brainstorm a list of individuals to invite. If we try for March, it will give us time to prepare, and avoid the incredibly busy April weekends. My preference for dates, in order, is March 30, 23, 2...but I haven't checked local event calendars. Please send me your thoughts on whether I should proceed and invite him, and ideas for structuring the event.
If you have time/interest in doing a review for Eirene, I pulled out four books that I believe were recently sent to us as review copies:
Downsizing the USA (by Thomas Naylor and William Willimon)
Rethinking Life and Death: The Collapse of our Traditional Ethics (by Peter Singer)
Global Gods: Exploring the Role of Religions in Modern Societies (by David Shenk)
With Open Hands (by Henri Nouwen)
There are many other good books in the JPI Library if you'd like to review one and nothing on this list grabs you.
Book reviews and other Eirene articles should be e-mailed to Hugh.
Thanks, Susan
