[SCL] activities warm-up

It was a pause, largely caused by my being net-incommunicado for 
almost a month. A few of us (Menzel, Sowa and me) managed to have one 
very useful face-to-face, however. I will briefly summarize the 
progress we made in a day or so and then we can start serious work 
next week, if thats OK with everyone. Watch this space, and sorry 
about the hang-up.

I think we should do some discussion first about how to carve the 
overall thing up, and there are a few technical things we need some 
new ideas about, but otherwise yes.
