Pat,
There's no such thing as a "vanilla" XML syntax. You have to make
commitments and design decisions at the very beginning, and to do so
you need a set of requirements. This doesn't have to be some big,
extensive document. But nobody can write an XML syntax without
knowing what problems/tasks/requirements you're trying to accomplish.
I don't put this down to a question of "style" at all.
I'm not interested in debates, old issues, etc. either, but absent a
set of design goals, any XML syntax will simply be a best guess, in
the dark.
