Deadline for application: March 31, 2009
We would like to draw your attention to the Summer Institute on Bounded Rationality in Psychology and Economics which will take place from July 15 to 22, 2009 at the Max Planck Institute for Human Development in Berlin. The objective of the Summer Institute is to introduce students to the study of bounded, ecological, and social rationality, that is, how people make decisions when information and time is limited and the future is uncertain. This year, the evening lecture will be given by Nobel laureate Reinhard Selten
Talented graduate students and postdoctoral fellows from around the world are invited to apply by March 31, 2009. We will provide all participants with stipends to cover part of their travel and accommodation expenses. Details on the Summer Institute and the application process are available at http://www.mpib-berlin.mpg.de/SummerInstitute <https://mpibmail.mpib-berlin.mpg.de/exchweb/bin/redir.asp?URL=http://www.mpib-berlin.mpg.de/SummerInstitute>
Please note that the application deadline (March 31, 2009) is upcoming soon.
ANNOUNCEMENT The 8th Summer Institute on Bounded Rationality in Psychology and Economics introduces graduate students and young researchers from different disciplines to the study of bounded, ecological, and social rationality. Bounded rationality addresses the question of how humans make decisions when time and information is limited and the future uncertain. In such a world, heuristics that ignore information can lead to better decisions than complex strategies do. The study of social and ecological rationality investigates the environments in which specific strategies succeed or fail. In our view, bounded rationality is neither optimization under constraints nor the study of cognitive illusions, but instead the study of Simon's "scissors", that is, how minds adapt to their environments.
AIM The main objective of this year's Summer Institute is to foster an interdisciplinary discussion of bounded, ecological, and social rationality. Faculty and invited speakers will provide a synthesis and overview of central research topics, methods, and findings. Lectures will be followed by discussion and hands-on exercises in small-group sessions. Participants will also be invited to present their own research in poster format, to be discussed by peers and faculty.
APPLICATION To ensure an excellent learning environment, participation is limited to approximately 35 exceptional graduate students or postdoctoral fellows from around the world. We will provide stipends to all participants to cover part of their travel and accommodation expenses; complete details on this will be announced at a later point. Interested scholars should apply by 31 March 2009 with a brief application letter (ca. 600-800 words) describing the applicant's interests and compatibility with the goals of the Summer Institute, together with a CV and one (confidential) letter of recommendation, preferably sent by email to Summerinstitute2009 at mpib-berlin.mpg.de.
