Sorry for sending you "spam" but I think this is important. I have a
12-year old kid in the College Station public schools.
Don McLeroy of Bryan is running once again for the Texas State Board
of Education in the upcoming Republican primary on March 2. He's been
on the Board for over 10 years including a stint where he was chairman
appointed by Rick Perry. Among other things, the Board chooses
textbooks for our schools and sets educational standards for K-12.
Because the Texas textbook market is so big, our textbook selection
affects the content of textbooks throughout the U.S. McLeroy is a
short-term creationist who believes that the earth is less than 10,000
years old. People with similar views frequently dominate the Board.
His opponent is Thomas Ratliff a "moderate" Republican who, unlike
McLeroy believes in evolution.
For more information see below and click on the links.
Needless to say, in addition to the serious detriment of the education
of our kids, McLeroy's presence on the state board makes Texas and
Bryan-College Station look like a joke to the rest of the country and
even the world. His re-election can only hurt us at Texas A&M
especially since he's from our area.
The Smart State Board of Education group is working hard to defeat
McLeroy. They're legitimate. I know and respect all of the officers.
They need money for the final push before the primary. But they also
request your vote in the REPUBLICAN primary. (In Texas you can vote in
the Republican primary even if you've never voted Republican before.)
Much as it pains me to be considered an R by anyone even for a short
period -- I will even vote in the Republican primary in order to help
defeat McLeroy.
If you can at all support them financially -- please do so (see
below). But -- more importantly -- vote McLeroy out in the Republican
primary (there is no Democratic party opposition in the general
election so that won't help).
Please also forward this email ASAP to others who may contribute and
vote.
Regards as always,
Danny

Below is the blurb for our final funding appeal for the Eagle ad.
Please email three friends, colleagues or family members whom you feel
might be interested in helping us. Feel free to use the text from the
blurb below or not... Please ask them to donate and forward the
message to three others... I, personally, would like to challenge
A&M faculty, staff, and students in particular.
************************************
Don McLeroy, our representative on the Texas State Board of Education
from here in District 9, believes that the earth is less than ten
thousand years old, that people walked with dinosaurs, and that
supernatural explanations are valid science (learn more click here)
District 9 Citizens for a Smart State Board of Education is a Special
Political Action Committee (SPAC) whose purpose is to oppose Don
McLeroy’s reelection to the Texas State Board of Education in the GOP
primary on March 2. The committee consists of concerned citizens from
the Brazos valley; Rich Woodward is the Treasurer; Amy Sharp is the
assistant treasurer; Dianne Kraft is the president; Michael Alvard is
member at large. There are many others in the group whose names you
would recognize.
We want to place a half page, color ad in the Eagle. The ad will
contain a plea for Democrats, Republicans, and Independents to vote
against McLeroy in the primary on Tuesday (Texas has open primaries).
We need help getting the funds together for the final push. The ad
costs $1800. We have around $1500 and we need your help….
Please go to our web page and donate what you can.
Next, email three friends and send them this email.
Finally, don’t forget to vote on Tuesday, March, 2nd.
